Here’s a taste of the brand new album MGT recorded during the 2020 lockdown with legendary Killing Joke drummer Big Paul Ferguson -released today on all streaming platforms on Cleopatra Records. ‘Extrapolate’ was mixed by noted producer Tom Dalgety (Killing Joke, Ghost, Rammstein) & is from the forthcoming album, ‘Virtual Control’ which will be released on June 25 on CD, digital & vinyl.

28th April 2021 – As a founding member and co-creative mind behind proto-industrial post-punk icons Killing Joke, Big Paul Ferguson has already earned his place among the most influential and highly regarded musicians of his era. Ferguson’s signature tribal drum style not only set Killing Joke apart from the scores of British bands coming up in the ‘80s, adding both depth and weight to the band’s piercing, discordant sound, but it also became a reference point for rock percussionists that followed in the band’s wake. Now, this rock music veteran steps into the spotlight for his first ever solo album, Virtual Control.

Mark Gemini Thwaite with Big Paul (London)

Following on from the 7 track collaboration BPF ‘Remote Viewing’ EP with guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite (MGT, Peter Murphy, Gary Numan) released in 2018, this new album features 10 original tracks also written with guitarist & instrumentalist MGT, who also mixed most of the album, and highlighted with special guest appearances from former Marilyn Manson member Tim Skold as well as Die Krupps mastermind JĂźrgen Engler, Virtual Control conjures a dense and foreboding aural atmosphere, layering guitars, synths and Ferguson’s own distinctive vocals, that underscores the thoughtfulness of Ferguson’s introspective and observant lyrics.

In anticipation of the album’s full release on June 25, we are excited to share Virtual Control’s first single “Extrapolate,” one of the album’s most propulsive tracks that rides an unrelenting guitar/bass hook supported by taut percussion and a hypnotic lead vocal, expertly mixed by award-winning producer Tom Dalgety (Pixies, Rammstein).   Ferguson shares these thoughts on what inspired the song, “My reflections on the dichotomies, social and personal, of these times. How our lives are being affected by isolation coupled with the bombardment of conflicting information. Our trust in what is real and true being challenged on a daily basis.”

Big Paul Ferguson: ‘Extrapolate’ single artwork

Mark: I’ve known the Killing Joke guys for years.. initially I befriended Paul Raven back in 1989 through mutual friend Bobby Rae Mayhem, who I was playing with in Spear of Destiny.. I jammed with Raven in London and remained friends.. this led inadvertently to an introduction to Big Paul after Raven died in 2007, I sent Paul a copy of the Mob Research album I had recorded with Raven, and once Paul was approached to submit a solo track to Mont Sherar’s Twilight of the Mortals book and vinyl release, Mont suggested I collaborate with Paul on his track(s). I think that was around 5 years ago.. 7 songs later we had the Remote Viewing EP in the can and that was released in 2018… we just spend the 2020 lockdown working on Paul’s next record ‘Remote Control’, which is released in June.” (Classofsounds.com)

Paul: “Mark is great to collaborate with, I couldn’t ask for more… he gets where I’m coming from and always delivers the missing pieces… It is very rewarding to have someone react favorably to one’s weird ideas and be able to elevate them as Mark has done, adding not only great guitar hooks but also bass and keyboard elements and after a lot of back and forth I’m really happy with his mixing. There’s no doubt in my mind that this material would still be demos on my laptop if it weren’t for the ease with which he and I work together and the magic touches he brings.” (ClassofSounds.com)

02 November 2020: Industrial icon meets goth god on this spectacular collaboration between Chris Connelly, best known for his work alongside Al Jourgensen in both Ministry and Revolting Cocks, and Mark Gemini Thwaite, a guitarist who has played with numerous bands over the years including The Mission, Tricky, Peter Murphy and more! Together, the pair offer this brilliant re-working of the 1975 soul classic, originally performed by British group Ace, “How Long (has this been going on).” This heartbreaking tale of romantic betrayal packs even more of an emotional wallop than the original thanks to an outstanding Bowie-esque vocal performance from Connelly and Thwaite’s subtle yet superbly effective guitar work and beats.

“The duo infuse the soul classic with their own brand of darkly electrified rock, with the exchanges between Thwaite’s gritty & powerful guitar and Connelly’s emotive Bowie-esque croon making for a dynamic rendition” (ReGen Magazine)

MGT shares this about the genesis of the collaboration: “When Cleopatra approached me back in April to come up with a darkwave inspired cover of this 70’s soul classic, I was certainly ready to meet the challenge. I’ve always been a fan of Chris Connolly’s work with Revolting Cocks, Ministry & Damage Manual – we’d already collaborated together on a song for Primitive Race a couple of years ago – so this has given us a chance to reconnect in the studio once again. He’s done a fantastic job!”
Meanwhile, Connelly shares the enthusiasm, saying “I have really enjoyed working with and getting to know Mark. His musical sensibility is so in tune with mine, his approach is exciting to me, so when he approached me about singing the 1974 Ace classic, it was an immediate resounding YES! I love the song, I love the harmonies and I love the challenge of approaching it with Mark’s exquisite musical intuition. I hope you love it as much as me!”

BPF Remote Viewing EP banner

“Co-produced with seasoned guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite, the BPF Remote Viewing EP is a thirty-minute rhythmic rumination, punctuated by hefty dollops of hard truth” (Vassifer)

Released on 24th August 2018 via the Dead Radio Station record label, we are pleased to confirm this new collaboration on the solo release by Big Paul Ferguson: Official (aka BPF) of post punk legends Killing Joke… with KJ embarking on a 40th anniversary tour in September, drummer “Big Paul” has announced the release of his solo debut EP, titled Remote Viewing, a new collaboration with Mark Gemini Thwaite.   The EP’s seven tracks include guitar, bass, and keyboard contributions from MarkGT, best known for his work with The Mission, Peter Murphy, Tricky, Gary Numan, and his own band MGT;  Ferguson had performed drums on the latest MGT album, Gemini Nyte. Also appearing will be Brainshadow, who mastered the album & performs electric violin on “X-Box.”

“Killing Joke drummer delivers a 9/10 widescreen classic”.. BPF “assembled the finished tracks by fleshing out his pre-recorded loops of rhythms, guitar and keyboards, with the assistance of the multi-instrumentalist Mark Gemini Thwaite (MGT)”..  “these songs are superbly produced, and it’s MGT who co-produced the album with Big Paul in Los Angeles”  Louderthanwar.com

“Drums rise to meet the fiery guitars of underground veteran Mark Gemini Thwaite, whose presence is felt throughout the EP”… “ fulfills everything the words Big Paul solo release promise”… “With Thwaite adding dark menace behind the curtain, the drums unsurprisingly take center stage”

“Remote Viewing will provide new treasures to listeners years after their introduction to it. An essential addition to the discography of one of underground music’s most innovative minds” JoeGausten.com

Check out the video teaser below for ‘I Am War”.. “The thundering hooves of “I Am War” arrive to deliver another densely layered exorcism wherein Thwaite unleashes an electrical storm of guitar noise” (Vassifer.blogs.com)

“Incredibly refreshing and unique.. it’s easy to hit play and before you know it you’re at the end. It’s dark and surreal, but it combines that with relaxing, hypnotic vibes that makes it difficult to turn away from. If you like Nine Inch Nails or any kind of melodic industrial music then you have to check it out” MetalPlanetMusic.com

BPF first made its debut with the track “The Great Motivator” on the 7-inch vinyl EP included with special editions of writer/photographer/biographer Mont Sherar’s Twilight of the Mortals book released in 2017 via PC-Press, which also featured MarkGT and is included on the new EP release. Written and recorded by Ferguson & Thwaite at Drum ‘n’ Steel Works in Baltimore, USA & co-produced and mixed by Thwaite at Mob Research laboratories in Los Angeles.. The EP will be released in CD and digital editions and is available for pre-order now via Dead Radio Station 🎧

http://teamrock.com/news/2018-01-18/mgt-premiere-video-for-new-track-every-little-dream

“Every Little Dream” is a song I wrote and demoed years before meeting Mark. It was one of those songs that was waiting for the right context before making its way into the world. When Mark and I started working together on the Gemini Nyte album, I sent him the demo and he loved it. Mark’s guitars and treatment certainly bring something to the party and the track has become one of our favourites, as well as treat to play live. Hopefully that comes through in the video as well, which was shot during our little European tour last year. Once again Mont Sherar did a wonderful job making us look good!” – Ashton Nyte

“”Every Little Dream” immediately stuck out to me, appealing to my indie rock sensibilities with its hint of Jesus & Mary Chain and post punk. I re-approached and recorded the guitars in a much heavier punky vibe, also adding some lead and a Steve Jones inspired solo.. and then asked the mighty Paul Ferguson of Killing Joke to add his powerhouse beats. It’s one of my favourite tracks on the new album.” – Mark Gemini Thwaite

MGT recently debuted Gemini Nyte’s first single “All The Broken Things,” a strident goth rocker with a new video featuring Nyte, Thwaite, Paul Ferguson and ex-The Mission bassist Richard Vernon. Mixed by legendary producer John Fryer (NINE INCH NAILS, HIM, THIS MORTAL COIL) and directed by Vicente Cordero who recently directed videos for QUEENSRŸCHE, 3TEETH and JYRKI 69. MGT embody the classic Goth Rock sound on ‘All The Broken Things’…“together they’ve resurrected the classic goth rock / darkwave sound on this new track. The stylistic hallmarks are intact from the opening, jangling guitar moments to the floor-pushing, driving bass all tied together with anthemic, arena-ready drumming” LOUDWIRE.com

Mark Gemini Thwaite: ”All The Broken Things” was one of the first songs that Ashton and I wrote after our initial collaborations on ‘Volumes’, and we knew it should be the first single from the new album when we performed it live on tour this summer and saw how well it was received, .. t’s a real statement of intent and indicator of the heavier vibe of the new album.. was also an honour to get one of our favourite drummers, Paul Ferguson of Killing Joke, to play on the songs, he totally rocks it.. any fans of our work together on the last album will love this new record.”

Ashton Nyte: “I think “All The Broken Things” is a wonderful introduction to this chapter of work, both sonically and lyrically. Mark and I started working together on the “Volumes” album and we just kept writing. We wrote and recorded most of the Gemini Nyte album within 3 or 4 months of meeting each other. I think that fluidity is reflected in this song and captured by the beautiful video Vicente Cordero has made for us.”

Vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ashton Nyte has released 7 stylistically diverse solo albums, as well as 8 albums as gothic rock outfit The Awakening, who completed a European tour with The Mission last year.

Spearheaded by the core lineup of Chris Kniker with Mark Gemini Thwaite and Erie Loch, and bringing on a new complement of guest collaborators, ‘Soul Pretender’ marks a natural progression from the band’s first incarnation – a more straightforward, hard rocking effort that draws on more of an alternative rock sound. “Having MGT and Erie there to round out the group and bring their sound in was always central in my mind,” according to Kniker, with “Thwaite’s driving guitar tone to add depth and that extra level of fury to the songwriting trinity”.

Among the newcomers on Soul Pretender is former Faith No More front man Chuck Mosley, bringing what Kniker calls “this gritty yet soulful style of punk rock to the mix.” Also joining the ranks this time is Melvins drummer Dale Crover; “I love Dale’s style – the big toms and the powerful snare hits. It was perfect and it brought a whole different tone, energy, and vibe to the songs.” Unlike the debut PR album, every song on the new record features the same musicians. Joe Haze lends his mixing talents to Soul Pretender, & Maor Appelbaum returns to once again after mastering the 2015 debut; Appelbaum’s presence is a perfect fit for the album given his experience with Mosley, remastering Faith No More’s “We Care a Lot,” following his work on the band’s “Sol Invictus” and bringing that distinctive alternative rock edge to the album.

STOP PRESS: Ex Faith No More & Primitive Race frontman Chuck Mosley dead at 57

On November 9, 2017, Mosley was found dead by his partner Pip Logan on the living room floor of their Cleveland home. Drug paraphernalia was discovered at the scene, with police later confirming a drugs overdose was the cause of death. His family released a statement that read:

After a long period of sobriety, Charles Henry Mosley III lost his life, on November 9th, 2017, due to the disease of addiction. We’re sharing the manner in which he passed, in the hopes that it might serve as a warning or wake up call or beacon to anyone else struggling to fight for sobriety. He is survived by long-term partner Pip Logan, two daughters, Erica and Sophie and his grandson Wolfgang Logan Mosley. The family will be accepting donations for funeral expenses. Details to follow when arranged.

Faith No More released the following statement:

It’s with a heavy, heavy heart we acknowledge the passing of our friend and bandmate, Chuck Mosley. He was a reckless and caterwauling force of energy who delivered with conviction and helped set us on a track of uniqueness and originality that would not have developed the way it had had he not been a part. How fortunate we are to have been able to perform with him last year in a reunion style when we re-released our very first record. His enthusiasm, his sense of humor, his style and his bravado will be missed by so many. We were a family, an odd and dysfunctional family, and we’ll be forever grateful for the time we shared with Chuck.
