MGT pays tribute to fallen hero Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots with an emotionally raw cover of STP No.4 classic deep-cut âAtlanta,â found on the new MGT album âGemini Nyteâ. The band has partnered with NewNoiseMagazine.com to premiere a video for the touching homage:
“As an avid fan of Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots I was deeply moved by his passing. Mark and I were busy recording the Gemini Nyte album at the time and I reached out to him to record some acoustic guitars for “Atlanta”, as I was toying with releasing a stripped version of the song as an Ashton Nyte solo single / tribute at the time. Mark kindly obliged and then kept adding bits and pieces to the musical arrangement and it organically evolved into a “Gemini Nyte” track. Once I had laid down the vocals I knew it had to be our album closer. It is not necessarily the best known STP track but has been my favourite song of Scott’s since the moment I first heard it. We shot a very impromptu video of Mark and I recording the song in the studio, in the hope that it captures the intimacy of the performance and the love we both have for this beautiful song and our respect for the body of work Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots have given us. âEvery Little Dreamâ is a song I wrote and demoed years before meeting Mark. It was one of those songs that was waiting for the right context before making its way into the world. When Mark and I started working together on the Gemini Nyte album, I sent him the demo and he loved it. Markâs guitars and treatment certainly bring something to the party and the track has become one of our favourites, as well as treat to play live. Hopefully that comes through in the video as well, which was shot during our little European tour last year. Once again Mont Sherar did a wonderful job making us look good!â – Ashton Nyte

Spearheaded by the core lineup of Chris Kniker with Mark Gemini Thwaite and Erie Loch, and bringing on a new complement of guest collaborators, ‘Soul Pretender’ marks a natural progression from the bandâs first incarnation â a more straightforward, hard rocking effort that draws on more of an alternative rock sound. âHaving MGT and Erie there to round out the group and bring their sound in was always central in my mind,â according to Kniker, with “Thwaiteâs driving guitar tone to add depth and that extra level of fury to the songwriting trinity”.
Among the newcomers on Soul Pretender is former Faith No More front man Chuck Mosley, bringing what Kniker calls âthis gritty yet soulful style of punk rock to the mix.â Also joining the ranks this time is Melvins drummer Dale Crover; âI love Daleâs style â the big toms and the powerful snare hits. Joe Haze lends his mixing talents to Soul Pretender, & Maor Appelbaum returns to once again after mastering the 2015 debut; Appelbaumâs presence is a perfect fit for the album given his experience with Mosley, remastering Faith No Moreâs âWe Care a Lot,â following his work on the bandâs âSol Invictusâ and bringing that distinctive alternative rock edge to the album.
STOP PRESS: Ex Faith No More & Primitive Race frontman Chuck Mosley dead at 57
On November 9, 2017, Mosley was found dead by his partner Pip Logan on the living room floor of their Cleveland home. Drug paraphernalia was discovered at the scene, with police later confirming a drugs overdose was the cause of death. His family released a statement that read:
After a long period of sobriety, Charles Henry Mosley III lost his life, on November 9th, 2017, due to the disease of addiction. Weâre sharing the manner in which he passed, in the hopes that it might serve as a warning or wake up call or beacon to anyone else struggling to fight for sobriety. He is survived by long-term partner Pip Logan, two daughters, Erica and Sophie and his grandson Wolfgang Logan Mosley. The family will be accepting donations for funeral expenses. Itâs with a heavy, heavy heart we acknowledge the passing of our friend and bandmate, Chuck Mosley. He was a reckless and caterwauling force of energy who delivered with conviction and helped set us on a track of uniqueness and originality that would not have developed the way it had had he not been a part. How fortunate we are to have been able to perform with him last year in a reunion style when we re-released our very first record. His enthusiasm, his sense of humor, his style and his bravado will be missed by so many. We were a family, an odd and dysfunctional family, and weâll be forever grateful for the time we shared with Chuck.
